Radial Carpus Bone Chips

Dr. Beebe,

We raise racing Quarter horses.  We are having problems with chips on radial carpus bones on 3 horses – all by the same  stallion.  Although it doesn’t appear conformationally that these horses are calf-kneed, the  vets tell me these chips are a result of calf-kneed horses.  Can OCD pellets help to increase bone in these areas in foals?  Also, we  have a horse that will undergo surgery for a chip in the upper carpal bone.   Can OCD pellets help rebuild bone for him in the knees?

Thanks for your insight.

    Linda,

Although the majority of bone issues are related to nutritional deficits the “calf-knee” issue is probably genetic. However , you must have a strong skeletal system if you are going to be racing and OCD Pellets will certainly supply the body with the necessary nutrients for the formation of a strong bone matrix. I have many vet surgeons that recommend feeding OCD Pellets both pre and post surgery, to aid in the healing process, along with the formation of strong new bone as the healing process is taking place.
Another aspect that OCD Pellets aid in, is the prevention of arthritis, which is always a concern particularly in post-operative joints. I would suggest you begin by feeding 2 oz/day, for the first 30 days
particularly in post -surgical cases. Many of my clients begin feeding their foals either in utero or as soon as they begin to eat on their own. This is when they are in the process of building the majority of their bone.

Thank you for your interest in OCD Pellets. Have a great day.

    Respectfully,
    Dr. D.R. Beebe
