My 18 month old AQHA colt has been diagnosed with Wobbler Syndrome, likely caused by a trauma while playing in the pasture. Currently, he is on stall rest, a low protein diet, 2 gm bute/daily and OCD pellets. Do you have any experience in this area? Surgery is not an option due to cost. Any thoughts?

Wobbler Syndrome is caused by a narrowing of the spinal canal resulting in a “pinching” on the spinal cord. Although it may be from trauma, I suggest you have some radiographs taken of the cervical area to determine the degree of narrowing. Your colt is young and there is still a great deal of growing that will take place in the next year or so. The OCD Pellets will certainly help with the bone development and will prevent the development of arthritis in the cervical joints. I would suggest you allow some exercise if radiographs show no fractures. Acupuncture is very helpful in these cases if a certified acupuncturist for horses is available in your area.
